Dream Team VI: Oghenekaro Etebo Now Highest Goal Scorer In Rio@2016 Olympics
idfielder Oghenekaro Etebo hit four goals as the Nigeria U23 team shrugged off jet lag to take three points off Japan in their opening match of the men’s football tournament of this year’s Olympics.
Oghenekaro Etebo and Sadiq Umar were outstanding as late comers Nigeria edged past Japan 5-4 in a Rio Olympics Group B match in Manaus Friday morning.
The opening match of this group had finished in a 2-2 draw between Sweden and Colombia and the Nigeria vs Japan clash was highlighted by an electric start with as many as four goals within as many minutes in the first 14 minutes of action.
Etebo who is presently the tournament’s highest goal scorer with four goals made his international debut on 27 July 2013 against Cote d’Ivoire in a 2–0 loss in Abidjan during the 2014 African Nations Championship qualification campaign. In December 2015, he helped the Nigerian U-23 Team to the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Senegal; finishing top scorer with 5 goals, including a brace in a 2–1 win against Algeria in the final.
He plays for the Portuguese club side CD Feirense as a Striker.
Nigeria now top Group B and will face Sweden on Sunday while Japan will face Colombia.
Nigeria next play European champions Sweden on Sunday night, also at the Amazonia Arena in Manaus.
