Vipers Get One Better Over Nigeria’s Enyimba
Erisa Ssekisambu scored a second half goal to give Uganda League champions Vipers SC a 1-0 win over Nigeria’s Enyimba Stars in the first leg of the 2016 Caf Champions League.
The home side started poorly at the Nakivubo stadium giving the Nigerians lots of space to pass the ball around. But the Vipers’ defenders Yusuf Mukisa, Patrick Ssembuya and skipper Nicholas Wadada stood firm.
After missed chances by Mike Mutyaba for Vipers and Christian Pyagbara and Joseph Osadiaye for the visitors, the first half ended goalless.
In the second half Vipers looked more aggressive as they took control of the game. Ssekisambu, fresh from the 2016 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) in Rwanda scored in the 72nd minute when he placed the ball past Enyimba’s goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.
The home side continued to press in search of a second goal, but failed to break the Enyimba Stars back-line.
“We are happy to start this campaign with a win in-front of our fans,” said Vipers coach George Nsimbe after the game.
Vipers had Keziron Kizito and Hamid Lwaliwa booked, while Enyimba Stars also had Damilace Ojo Oluna cautioned. Enyimba’s coach Paul Aigbogun said that they will make sure they win the return leg encounter on February 27.
